Parle Chief 'Thrilled' as PM Modi's Melody Gift Goes Viral

Parle chief celebrates viral success after PM Modi gifts Melody to Italian PM Meloni.

Parle Products has expressed excitement after Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted packets of the company’s popular Melody toffees to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his recent visit to Italy. The gesture quickly went viral online after Meloni shared a short video featuring the gift, sparking widespread discussion on social media and triggering a surge in demand for the candy across India. The unexpected moment of “sweet diplomacy” also brought renewed global attention to one of India’s most recognized confectionery brands.

According to Parle Products Vice President Mayank Pravinchandra Shah, the company received an overwhelming response after the video surfaced online. Shah described the development as a “pleasant surprise” and said the company was “absolutely thrilled” by the recognition. He noted that the viral moment generated significant visibility for Melody, with social media conversations rapidly increasing and quick-commerce platforms reporting a spike in searches and purchases for the candy in several Indian cities.

Major quick-commerce platforms reportedly showed Melody going out of stock in multiple locations shortly after the video gained traction online. Platforms including Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart witnessed increased consumer activity linked to the product, while Blinkit publicly acknowledged a sudden surge in Melody-related searches on its application. The incident also led to widespread online discussion around Indian consumer brands and their growing global visibility through diplomatic and cultural exchanges.

Parle Products said the gesture by Prime Minister Modi reflected the growing international recognition of Indian brands and “Swadeshi” products. Shah stated that Melody, which is already available in more than 100 countries, is primarily consumed by Indian communities living abroad. However, he believes the latest international attention could help the brand expand beyond the Indian diaspora and reach local consumers in foreign markets as well. The company now plans to strengthen Melody’s global presence and increase its visibility in additional international markets.

The viral moment also created confusion in financial markets, with some investors reportedly purchasing shares of Parle Industries after mistaking it for Parle Products. Parle Industries, however, is an unrelated infrastructure and recycling company and does not manufacture Melody or other confectionery products. Despite renewed attention surrounding the Parle brand, Shah clarified that Parle Products currently has no plans to pursue a public stock market listing, despite continued speculation regarding a potential initial public offering.

The “Melodi” trend—a popular blend of the names Modi and Meloni—has repeatedly gained traction online whenever the two leaders interact publicly. The phrase became especially popular after Meloni shared a selfie video with Modi during the G7 Summit in 2025. Observers say the latest gesture involving Melody toffees goes beyond internet humor and reflects strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between India and Italy. Both countries are currently working closely on initiatives such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), while bilateral trade between the two nations has crossed $16 billion in recent years.
