“Only One Who Didn’t Bend”: Priyanka Gandhi Stands by Rahul in LS Debate

Priyanka Gandhi praises Rahul Gandhi’s firm stand in Lok Sabha, criticises BJP for hypocrisy.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday strongly defended Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, saying he is the only person in the country who has not bowed before the BJP-led government. Her remarks came during a debate on the resolution seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Addressing the House, Priyanka Gandhi pointed out what she described as the ruling party’s hypocrisy, noting that leaders who often criticised former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru were now quoting him to justify their actions. “I was laughing today, because the person whom they criticise every day—Nehru ji—they are quoting the same person today. Suddenly, they have started respecting Nehru ji,” she said, drawing loud applause from Opposition benches.

Priyanka Gandhi then defended Rahul Gandhi, highlighting his resilience amid sustained attacks from the government over the past 12 years. “There is only one person in this country who did not bend in front of these people in these past 12 years—that is the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi. This is because the LoP does not shy away from speaking the truth. They cannot digest the truth,” she said.

Her comments were made amid a wider debate on the motion against Speaker Om Birla. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju responded by emphasizing that all members of Parliament, whether ruling or Opposition, are bound by laws and constitutional provisions. He added that it is necessary to call out anyone who considers themselves above these rules, in what appeared to be a veiled reference to Rahul Gandhi.

The exchange highlighted the heightened tensions in the Lok Sabha, with Opposition leaders defending their stance while the government insisted on adherence to parliamentary norms. Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks, in particular, underscored her continued support for her brother and Leader of Opposition, framing him as a steadfast voice in the House despite political pressures.

Amid the ongoing debate, the session reflected the deep partisan divides in Parliament, with members engaging in sharp exchanges over both procedural and political issues surrounding the Speaker and broader governance concerns.
