OMFED Hikes Milk Prices In Odisha By Rs 4 Citing Higher Costs

Odisha milk prices increased up to Rs 4 per litre due to higher costs.

The Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation has increased milk prices by up to ₹4 per litre across categories, citing rising processing and transportation costs, with the revised rates coming into effect from Sunday.

Under the new pricing structure, toned milk has been increased from ₹50 to ₹54 per litre, while premium milk now costs ₹58 per litre, up from ₹54. The price of gold premium milk has been revised from ₹56 to ₹60 per litre, and the gold premium plus variant has increased from ₹60 to ₹64 per litre. The changes were announced by Odisha’s Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik.

The revised prices also apply to smaller packaging units. According to officials, 500 ml pouches of toned milk and premium milk will now be sold at ₹27 and ₹29 respectively. Authorities said the adjustment was necessary due to increased input costs across the supply chain, including processing and transportation expenses.

Minister Mallik said milk prices had not been revised for a long time and emphasised that the decision was taken with consideration for both consumers and farmers. He added that procurement prices for milk purchased from producers have also been increased, ensuring better returns for dairy farmers under the cooperative system.

As part of the procurement revision, cow milk purchased from farmers will now be bought at ₹39.05 per litre, reflecting an increase of ₹1 per litre. Similarly, buffalo milk procurement prices have been raised by ₹1.60 per litre, aimed at improving income stability for rural milk producers.

Officials maintained that despite the hike, OMFED’s retail prices remain competitive compared to private dairy brands operating in the market. They also assured consumers that there would be no compromise on quality standards even after the revision.

The price increase is expected to have a moderate impact on household budgets, particularly in urban areas where branded milk consumption is higher. However, authorities argue that the revision is necessary to maintain supply chain sustainability while supporting farmers amid rising operational costs.
