Omar Abdullah Warns India Dragged Into Crisis After Iranian Warship Sinking

Omar Abdullah calls US attack on Iranian warship near Sri Lanka “unfortunate,” stressing India’s indirect involvement.

Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, expressed concern over the sinking of an Iranian warship by a US submarine off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, describing the incident as “unfortunate.” The attack, which killed dozens of sailors, marked a significant escalation in tensions in the Indian Ocean and West Asia.

The Iranian warship, IRIS Dena, was reportedly returning to Iran from a naval exercise in India when it was targeted by the US submarine. Abdullah highlighted the sensitive nature of the situation, stating, “They were our guests. In some way, our country is also being dragged into this situation. What will happen in the future is beyond my jurisdiction.”

The incident comes amid rising regional tensions, as Washington expands its operations against the Iranian navy in the Indian Ocean. The sinking of IRIS Dena has prompted international concern, given the loss of life and the potential for further escalation.

On regional politics, Abdullah commented on Nepal’s upcoming elections, calling them “essential for democracy” and noting the emergence of a new political leader. “Elections must be conducted properly in a democracy. Let us see what decision the people of Nepal take,” he said.

Abdullah also weighed in on the Rajya Sabha nomination of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, terming it an internal state matter and extending best wishes for his constructive role in the Upper House. “I will also ask three of my colleagues in Rajya Sabha to meet Nitish Kumar from time to time,” Abdullah added.
