Noida International Airport Readies For First Commercial Flight With 12 Million Passenger Capacity

Noida Airport awaits final clearances ahead of its first commercial flight operations.

The Noida International Airport is nearing readiness for its first commercial flight, marking a major milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure. Spread across a vast expanse, the airport features a 3,900-metre runway and a modern terminal built with steel and glass, reflecting both scale and ambition. While construction activity has largely concluded, the facility is currently awaiting final regulatory clearances before commencing operations.

The airport was officially inaugurated on March 28, following years of development that began with the foundation stone laid by Narendra Modi in November 2021. The project was executed by Tata Projects, while Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, serves as the concessionaire. Together, they have delivered a key infrastructure project aimed at easing pressure on existing airports in north India.

In its first phase, the airport spans 1,334 hectares and includes two runways along with a terminal capable of handling 12 million passengers annually. Future expansion plans are already in place, with Phase 2 expected to increase capacity to 30 million passengers. The full development, planned across four phases over several decades, aims to accommodate up to 70 million passengers, with a total projected investment of nearly Rs 30,000 crore.

The terminal design blends global efficiency with Indian cultural elements, featuring architectural inspirations drawn from traditional ghats seen in cities like Varanasi and Haridwar. The structure includes a distinctive wavy roof symbolising regional rivers, along with intricate lattice screens and open courtyards that reflect India’s architectural heritage. The design seeks to create a modern yet culturally rooted travel experience for passengers.

Airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express are expected to be among the first to operate from the airport. Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu has indicated that the airport will initially connect at least 10 domestic destinations, with cargo operations also planned from the outset to strengthen logistics capabilities.

Beyond aviation, the project is already showing significant economic impact, with over one lakh direct and indirect jobs expected to be generated. Officials view the airport not just as an alternative to existing hubs but as a strategic necessity to support future growth in air travel and regional development. As it prepares for its first flight, the Noida International Airport is set to play a crucial role in shaping India’s aviation landscape.
