Nitish Kumar Takes Oath As Rajya Sabha Member, Bihar Enters New Political Phase

Nitish Kumar takes oath as Rajya Sabha MP, signaling a major political transition in Bihar.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha, marking his formal entry into the Upper House of Parliament. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted in the chamber of Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, completing a long-speculated political development.

According to details shared around the event, Kumar’s induction into the Rajya Sabha fulfils a long-expressed ambition of the veteran leader to serve in all major legislative forums, including the state assembly, legislative council, Lok Sabha, and now the Rajya Sabha. His move has been viewed as a significant milestone in his decades-long political career.

Kumar arrived in New Delhi on Thursday and was received by leaders of his party, the Janata Dal (United), including national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha. Speaking briefly to reporters upon arrival, he said he had come to take oath. He was later formally administered the oath in the Upper House ceremony.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 along with four other candidates supported by the ruling alliance. Soon after, he was also elected unopposed as the party’s national president, following the absence of rival nominations. These developments have further consolidated his position within party and alliance structures.

Under constitutional provisions, Kumar can continue as Chief Minister for up to six months even after becoming a member of Parliament. However, rules under Article 101 of the Constitution prohibit simultaneous membership of a state legislature and Parliament, requiring resignation from one within the stipulated period. A by-election is expected to be held within six months to fill the resulting vacancy.

The development has also sparked political discussion in the state, with leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) suggesting that Bihar will continue under its existing governance framework. The move is being closely watched as a key political transition unfolds within Bihar, where leadership decisions for the coming months are expected to shape the state’s political direction.
