Nitin Gadkari Reveals Maruti Suzuki E100 Flex Fuel Car Launch on June 5

New Delhi is poised to host a significant development in India's automotive sector as Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that Maruti Suzuki will launch a flex fuel vehicle capable of running on E100 on June 5, Environment Day. The minister made the revelation during a recent event while highlighting the government's push towards alternative fuels to reduce pollution and dependence on imported fossil fuels.

E100 refers to 100 per cent ethanol, a cleaner and more efficient fuel option compared to conventional petrol. Gadkari emphasised that such vehicles represent an indigenous, cost-effective, and pollution-free solution that supports farmers by utilising domestically produced ethanol.

The minister noted that ethanol priced at around Rs 65 per liter offers an effective running cost of approximately Rs 25 per liter when used in flex fuel engines. He shared his personal experience of using a similar vehicle for the past one and a half years, which also generates 60 percent electricity while running. Gadkari pointed out that fossil fuels like petrol and diesel remain India's biggest pollution challenge, with 87 per cent of these fuels being imported. He expressed satisfaction over the introduction of electric vehicles across segments and stressed that flex fuel technology will now be scaled up significantly in the coming months.

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, will launch the E100-compatible vehicle as part of a broader programme in the national capital. The minister revealed that 12 companies, including Toyota, Tata, Mahindra, and Suzuki, have already introduced flex fuel vehicles in the market. Two-wheelers running on such technology have also been introduced. The new launch aligns with the government's recent notification of E30 ethanol blending standards and its long-term vision to minimise the use of imported fuels while boosting agricultural income through ethanol production.

The proposed Maruti Suzuki flex fuel car is expected to encourage wider adoption of E100 among consumers. Flex fuel engines are specifically designed to handle pure ethanol, which has a higher octane rating for better combustion efficiency. However, regular petrol vehicles require modifications to run on E100 due to its corrosive nature and different energy characteristics. The government views flex-fuel vehicles as key enablers for reducing crude oil imports and lowering vehicular emissions across the country.

Gadkari urged the industry to accelerate the shift away from petrol, diesel, and gas towards sustainable alternatives. He described ethanol as an import substitute that empowers farmers to become energy providers for the nation. The Environment Day launch is expected to draw considerable attention from the automobile sector and environmentally conscious consumers. Industry observers believe this move could accelerate India's transition towards greener mobility solutions.

This development comes at a time when the automotive industry is actively exploring multiple pathways, including electrification and alternative fuels, to meet evolving environmental standards. The government's consistent focus on ethanol blending and flex fuel technology reflects a strategic effort to achieve energy security while addressing climate concerns. As Maruti Suzuki prepares for the June 5 launch, the initiative is likely to influence future product strategies of other manufacturers operating in the Indian market.
