Nishant Kumar Likely To Join Bihar Legislative Council Through MLC Route

Nishant Kumar is likely to enter Bihar Legislative Council, continuing his family’s political legacy.

The political landscape in Bihar is set for a possible generational and dynastic shift, with reports indicating that Nishant Kumar, son of Former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is likely to enter the state legislative council through the upcoming elections. Nishant, who was recently inducted into the state cabinet for the first time, is now expected to follow a similar political pathway to his father by entering the legislature via the upper house route.

According to sources, as many as 10 seats in the Bihar Legislative Council are set to fall vacant in June, creating a significant opportunity for political appointments. Of these, nine members are completing their terms on June 28, while one seat is already vacant following Nitish Kumar’s resignation after his election to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year.

Alongside Nishant Kumar, Deepak Prakash, son of Upendra Kushwaha, is also expected to secure a berth in the legislative council. His likely entry highlights the continued presence of political families in Bihar’s upper legislative chamber, particularly through nomination and indirect electoral routes.

The Legislative Council elections are expected to be announced by the end of May, with political parties preparing for strategic nominations. The council, which functions as the upper house in the state legislature, often serves as a pathway for leaders who are either awaiting direct electoral contests or are being positioned for ministerial responsibilities.

Meanwhile, political controversy has also emerged around administrative designations in the state cabinet. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) spokesperson Ejaz Ahmad has alleged inconsistencies in official notifications regarding the status of senior Janata Dal (United) leaders Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav, claiming confusion over whether they hold the position of deputy chief ministers or ministers.

The unfolding developments reflect both administrative reshuffling and increasing political maneuvering in Bihar, as parties position key figures ahead of upcoming electoral cycles and strengthen internal leadership structures within the state’s legislative framework.
