Nirmala Sitharaman Predicts 7% India Growth Despite Global Economic Uncertainties

Sitharaman expects India to maintain 7% growth.

India's economy is expected to maintain growth of around 7% despite continuing global uncertainties, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while addressing members of the Indian diaspora in Chicago. She said India's economic momentum has remained strong since the Covid-19 pandemic and expressed confidence that the country would continue to expand at a robust pace despite challenges affecting the global economy. Sitharaman highlighted the resilience of India's economy while speaking to the Indian community in Chicago. According to the finance minister, India has recorded growth of 7% or more since the pandemic period, demonstrating the strength of domestic economic activity.

She said the momentum was expected to continue even as economies around the world face heightened uncertainty. The finance minister's comments come against a backdrop of several global disruptions that have complicated the economic outlook. Wars and geopolitical tensions have affected trade and investment flows, while uncertainty surrounding tariffs has created additional challenges for businesses and governments. Disruptions to global supplies of energy and fertilisers have also raised concerns over production costs and inflation in several economies. Sitharaman said these external challenges would not necessarily derail India's growth trajectory.

The government's expectation of maintaining growth at around 7% reflects its assessment that the domestic economy has sufficient underlying strength to withstand volatility in the international environment. Strong domestic demand and continued economic activity remain important factors supporting that outlook. Global tariff uncertainty has emerged as a particularly significant concern for economies dependent on international trade. Changes in tariff policies can affect the cost of goods, supply chains, investment decisions and export competitiveness. For India, maintaining economic growth amid such uncertainty requires balancing international trade opportunities with domestic economic priorities.

The finance minister also pointed to disruptions in energy and fertiliser supplies as challenges facing the global economy. Energy prices can have a broad impact on transportation, manufacturing and household costs, while fertiliser availability is closely linked to agricultural production and food prices. These pressures can therefore have consequences extending beyond individual sectors and influence overall economic stability.

India's ability to sustain growth despite these challenges is increasingly important as the country seeks to strengthen its position as one of the world's major economies. Continued expansion can support investment, employment and infrastructure development while helping improve domestic consumption and production. The government's focus has therefore remained on maintaining economic momentum while navigating an uncertain external environment.

Addressing the Indian diaspora in Chicago, Sitharaman's remarks also sought to underline confidence in India's longer-term economic prospects. She presented the country's post-pandemic growth performance as evidence of its resilience and said the momentum could continue despite international headwinds. Her assessment comes as governments and businesses worldwide continue to contend with geopolitical conflicts, trade uncertainty and disruptions affecting essential commodities.

While these factors could create risks for India's economic outlook, Sitharaman maintained that the country is positioned to sustain growth of about 7%. The government's confidence will ultimately depend on how effectively India manages external shocks while maintaining domestic economic activity.
