NC Leaders Protest In Delhi Seeking Restoration Of Jammu And Kashmir Statehood

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Monday staged a protest in the national capital demanding the immediate restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. Led by NC president Farooq Abdullah, party leaders and workers gathered at the Jammu and Kashmir House on Prithviraj Road on the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, urging the central government to fulfil its commitments regarding the restoration of statehood.

The protest was joined by senior Jammu and Kashmir Congress leaders, including state unit president Tariq Hamid Karra and AICC member Ghulam Ahmad Mir. Demonstrators carried placards with messages such as “Fulfil your promise,” “Restore rights and dignity of people of J&K” and “Restore full statehood.” Protesters also raised slogans questioning why promises made regarding Jammu and Kashmir’s political status had not been completed.

Speaking during the demonstration, Farooq Abdullah said the demand for full statehood was based on commitments made by the Prime Minister and Home Minister in Parliament, as well as statements made before the Supreme Court. He said the government should respect the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and also address concerns related to Ladakh. He reiterated that the restoration of statehood remained a key issue for his party.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was also seen heading towards the Constitution Club, where a seminar on the restoration of statehood was organised. The NC had initially planned to hold its protest at Jantar Mantar, but party leaders said permission from the Delhi administration had not been communicated until Monday morning, leading to a change in the protest location.

The NC demonstration took place amid a larger security situation in Delhi due to multiple protests planned around Parliament. The spotlight at Jantar Mantar was on the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), whose supporters attempted to march towards Parliament over the NEET-UG paper leak issue. Security personnel stopped the protesters near Sansad Marg Police Station and Raisina Road, around 200 metres from Parliament, using crowd-control measures.

Delhi Police also deployed additional security arrangements in central Delhi, with reports of barricading and restrictions around key areas. Earlier, several Delhi Metro stations were temporarily affected due to security concerns related to the Parliament march, though some stations later resumed normal operations. The day saw multiple groups raising different demands near the seat of government during the opening of the Monsoon Session.
