Nagpur Security Alert After Radioactive Threat Letter Targets RSS, BJP

Nagpur on high alert after a radioactive‑threat letter names RSS HQ and BJP office.

Nagpur has been placed on high security alert after authorities received an anonymous letter claiming a radioactive threat targeting key political and public locations, including the RSS headquarters and a BJP office, prompting intensive investigation and city-wide safety checks.

The letter, which was addressed to the office of the Police Commissioner, allegedly warned that a highly dangerous radioactive substance—identified as caesium-137—had been placed at multiple sensitive sites across the city. Among the locations specifically mentioned were the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Mahal, the RSS-linked Smriti Mandir complex, and a BJP office in the Ganeshpeth area.

Security agencies responded immediately, with teams from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and atomic energy experts conducting detailed inspections at all listed locations. Officials deployed radiation detection equipment and carried out ground-level sweeps to check for any hazardous material.

Preliminary findings have not detected any traces of radioactive substances, leading investigators to suspect that the threat may be a hoax intended to create panic. However, authorities have not ruled out malicious intent and have expanded the probe to trace the origin of the letter and identify those responsible.

The letter reportedly also referenced other public infrastructure, including metro stations and bus depots, raising concerns about a broader attempt to destabilize public confidence. In response, security has been tightened across Nagpur, especially around politically sensitive and high-footfall areas.

Officials confirmed that a case has been registered and multiple investigative teams are working on digital and forensic analysis to determine whether the threat is linked to any organised group. The involvement of specialised CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) units highlights the seriousness with which the alert is being treated.

While the immediate threat has not been substantiated, the incident has prompted heightened vigilance in the city, with authorities maintaining round-the-clock surveillance and urging the public not to spread rumours as the investigation continues.
