Mumbai Under Orange Alert As IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall This Week
IMD issues orange alert for Mumbai with heavy rain expected July 3.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra as the southwest monsoon intensifies across the region, with forecasts indicating the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the coming days. The alerts come as the monsoon, which arrived later than usual this year, has now fully set in over the state.
According to the IMD, Mumbai is expected to experience generally cloudy skies accompanied by heavy rain over the next 48 hours. The weather department has warned that very heavy rainfall may occur during night and early morning hours, increasing the risk of waterlogging and traffic disruptions in low-lying areas of the city.
The agency has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday, cautioning residents about heavy rain at isolated locations. Overnight showers have already affected normal life in parts of the city, with reports of waterlogging, slow traffic movement, and congestion on key routes. Authorities are closely monitoring vulnerable areas as rainfall activity is expected to intensify.

From July 1 to July 4, the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, prompting an orange alert for Mumbai during this period. The most critical warning has been issued for July 3, when the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places has been highlighted. The IMD defines this category as rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm in 24 hours at a weather station.
Officials have advised residents to remain cautious, especially in flood-prone and coastal zones, as continuous rainfall may strain drainage systems and slow down transportation networks. With monsoon activity expected to remain strong, civic authorities are preparing emergency response measures to handle potential flooding and infrastructure disruptions across Mumbai and surrounding areas.
