Mumbai Airport to Briefly Suspend Operations For Pre-Monsoon Maintenance - Check Details

Mumbai Airport closes both runways on May 7, 11 AM-5 PM, for pre-monsoon maintenance work.

Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will be temporarily affected on May 7 as the airport undertakes scheduled pre-monsoon maintenance work. Authorities have announced that both runways at the airport will remain closed for nearly six hours to complete repair and inspection work ahead of the rainy season. The temporary suspension is aimed at ensuring smooth and safe operations during the upcoming monsoon months.

According to the official advisory, both the primary runway 09/27 and the secondary runway 14/32 will remain non-operational from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on May 7. During this period, no flight arrivals or departures will take place on the runways. Airport authorities stated that the shutdown is a planned and necessary step to maintain operational efficiency while minimising weather-related risks once monsoon conditions begin.

Specialist teams are expected to inspect the runway surfaces carefully for cracks, structural damage, waterlogging risks, and signs of wear and tear caused by regular aircraft movement. Repair teams will also carry out resurfacing and preventive maintenance where required. Such annual pre-monsoon checks are considered crucial in Mumbai, where heavy rainfall can significantly impact airport infrastructure and flight schedules.

The airport operator said preparations for the maintenance block began around six months ago. Airlines were informed in advance so they could revise schedules, reschedule flights, or make alternate arrangements for passengers. This early planning is intended to reduce inconvenience for travellers and avoid last-minute disruptions during the closure window.

Passengers travelling through Mumbai on May 7 have been advised to check their flight status directly with airlines before heading to the airport. Some services may be rescheduled, delayed, or adjusted depending on operational planning. As one of India’s busiest aviation hubs, even a short closure at Mumbai Airport can affect multiple domestic and international connections.
