MoS Mohol: IndiGo Cancelled 6,936 Flights in Three Months, Affecting 10.81 Lakh Flyers
Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol informed Parliament that IndiGo cancelled 6,936 flights over 3 months.
More than 10 lakh air passengers were affected after IndiGo cancelled over 6,900 flights in a three-month period, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol disclosed the figures in a written reply, drawing attention to the scale of disruptions faced by flyers on India’s largest airline by market share.
According to the data shared in Parliament, 6,936 flights were cancelled, impacting 10,81,680 passengers during the period under review. The cancellations went beyond routine operational changes and reflected sustained disruptions, particularly during peak travel months, raising concerns over passenger convenience and airline preparedness.
The minister attributed the large number of cancellations to a mix of factors, including operational and planning issues, adverse weather conditions, and system-related shortcomings. Mohol noted that challenges in managing flight schedules and compliance with aviation norms had contributed to the widespread impact on travellers.

Mohol also highlighted broader systemic issues within the civil aviation ecosystem. He informed the House that 2,645 posts are currently vacant across the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and key regulatory bodies such as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA), potentially affecting oversight and operational efficiency.
Following large-scale disruptions reported late last year, the DGCA had taken up the matter with IndiGo, examining adherence to crew duty norms, flight scheduling practices, and passenger grievance redressal mechanisms. The civil aviation regulator has previously stated that airlines are required to ensure timely communication, refunds, and alternative arrangements in case of cancellations.
The issue has reignited debate around airline accountability and regulatory capacity in India’s rapidly growing aviation market. With passenger numbers rising steadily, the government said steps are being taken to strengthen regulatory staffing and oversight to minimise disruptions and improve service reliability for air travellers.
