Medical Note Says Sonam Wangchuk Underwent Check-Up Voluntarily After Dizziness

Sonam Wangchuk undergoes check-up after mild dizziness.

Climate activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk underwent a medical check-up at Delhi’s Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital earlier this week after complaining of mild dizziness, according to a medical note accessed by Hindustan Times. The document, dated July 13, stated that Wangchuk underwent the examination “of his own free will” and recorded his hydration level as fair. The medical note identified the patient as Sonam Wangchuk, 53, male, and stated that the examination was conducted at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS)-Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

The report mentioned mild dizziness as the primary complaint and included details of the medical assessment conducted during the visit. According to sources, Wangchuk had declined hospitalisation during the earlier medical visit but was taken to the hospital for evaluation and necessary care. The latest development came after police officials took him from the protest site at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for medical attention.

Wangchuk has been participating in a protest organised by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), demanding discussions on issues related to Ladakh’s political status and safeguards for the region. The Climate activist joined the protest on June 28 and has remained on hunger strike since then. The agitation began at Jantar Mantar on June 20, with participants raising concerns over demands related to statehood for Ladakh and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Protesters have also sought measures to protect the region’s environment, culture and land resources amid concerns over rapid development and ecological challenges. Wangchuk, who is known for his work in education and sustainable development, has frequently highlighted environmental concerns affecting the Himalayan region. His activism has focused on issues including climate change, responsible development and the preservation of fragile ecosystems.

The medical update comes amid continued attention on Wangchuk’s health due to his prolonged hunger strike. Doctors have been monitoring his condition as concerns increase over the impact of extended fasting on his physical well-being. Authorities have maintained that medical assistance is being provided whenever required, while supporters of Wangchuk’s campaign have continued to call attention to the demands behind the protest. The situation remains closely watched as discussions continue over the issues raised by the Ladakh groups.
