Mamata Banerjee Writes To Poll Chief Over “Arbitrary” Reshuffle

Mamata Banerjee objects to poll reshuffle, calls move arbitrary.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to the Chief Election Commissioner objecting to the recent administrative reshuffle in the state, calling the move “arbitrary” and “unilateral.” The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader raised concerns over the transfer of officials ahead of the election process, arguing that the decision was taken without adequate consultation with the state government.

In her communication to the head of the Election Commission of India, Banerjee said the reshuffle of certain administrative and police officials could disrupt governance and affect the functioning of the state administration. She contended that the transfers were carried out abruptly and sought clarification from the poll body on the reasons behind the decision.

The chief minister also expressed concern that such moves could create uncertainty among officials responsible for maintaining law and order and overseeing administrative work during a sensitive political period. According to sources in the state government, the letter urged the Election Commission to review the reshuffle and ensure that due procedures are followed in the future.

The Election Commission routinely orders transfers of officials before elections as part of measures aimed at ensuring a neutral administrative environment. Such steps are often taken to prevent potential conflicts of interest and to maintain fairness during the electoral process.

Political tensions in West Bengal have been high as parties intensify preparations for upcoming polls. Opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have repeatedly accused the state administration of favouring the ruling TMC, allegations the state government has denied.

Banerjee’s latest letter highlights the continuing friction between the state government and the Election Commission over the management of election-related administrative decisions. The poll body has not yet issued an official response to the chief minister’s remarks.
