Karnataka Emerges As India’s Coconut Capital With Highest Production Output

Karnataka has emerged as the leading coconut-producing state in India, earning it the informal title of the country’s “coconut capital.” Known for its extensive coconut plantations, favourable tropical climate, and strong agricultural output, the state has overtaken traditional leader Kerala in overall production, according to data from the Coconut Development Board.

Coconut cultivation in Karnataka is concentrated across several key districts, including Tumakuru, Hassan, Mandya, Mysuru, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru. These regions collectively contribute a significant share of India’s coconut output, supporting both domestic consumption and large-scale industrial processing. The crop plays a vital role in the rural economy, providing livelihoods to thousands of farmers across the state.

Over the years, Karnataka has developed a strong coconut-based ecosystem that goes beyond cultivation. The state is known for producing tender coconuts, copra, coconut oil, desiccated coconut, coconut powder and coir-based products. Improved farming techniques, higher productivity per hectare, and a growing processing industry have further strengthened its position as a national leader in the sector.

While Karnataka leads at the state level, the city of Pollachi in Tamil Nadu is often referred to as the “Coconut City” of India. Located in the Coimbatore district, Pollachi is famous for its vast coconut groves, active coconut trading markets, and a thriving coir manufacturing industry. The region has long been recognised as one of the country’s most important hubs for coconut cultivation and export.

Other southern states, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, also remain major contributors to India’s coconut production. However, Karnataka continues to stand out due to its scale of cultivation, improving agricultural productivity, and strong integration with processing industries. This combination has helped the state maintain its lead in overall output.

Karnataka’s rise to the top reflects a broader shift in India’s agricultural landscape, where improved farming practices and commercial processing have reshaped traditional production patterns. Today, it is widely recognised as the country’s leading coconut-producing state, reinforcing its reputation as India’s coconut capital.
