Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Criticises Centre Over Fuel Price Increase
Siddaramaiah criticises Centre over fuel hike, demands immediate rollback.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has strongly criticised the Union government over the recent increase in fuel prices, calling for an immediate rollback of what he described as an unfair burden on the public. His remarks come amid growing political debate over rising fuel costs and their impact on households and transport-dependent sectors.
The Chief Minister argued that the fuel price hike has added pressure on common citizens already dealing with inflation in essential commodities. He said that fuel is a basic necessity that directly affects the cost of living, including food prices, transportation expenses, and small business operations. Siddaramaiah urged the Centre to reconsider its pricing decisions in the interest of economic stability for ordinary people.
According to reports, Siddaramaiah alleged that the Centre has consistently increased indirect tax components on petroleum products, leading to higher retail prices across states, including Karnataka. He claimed that states are left with limited flexibility to reduce rates significantly due to revenue dependencies, while the burden ultimately falls on consumers. The Chief Minister has repeatedly maintained that fuel taxation structure needs reform to provide relief to the public.

The Karnataka government’s criticism also comes at a time when opposition parties across the country have intensified their attacks on fuel pricing policies. Siddaramaiah has positioned the issue as part of a broader concern over inflation management, stating that rising fuel costs have a cascading effect on nearly every sector of the economy, particularly agriculture, logistics, and public transport.
The Centre, however, has in earlier responses defended its fuel pricing framework, citing global crude oil volatility and the need to maintain fiscal balance. It has also pointed out that both central and state taxes contribute to the final pump price, making fuel pricing a shared responsibility between different levels of government.
As political debate continues, the demand for a rollback adds to the ongoing national discussion on taxation, inflation control, and energy affordability, with fuel prices remaining a key issue affecting both economic policy and public sentiment.
