July 20 Parliament March On Track as Gitanjali Backs Wangchuk's Movement

Gitanjali confirms July 20 Parliament march plans.

Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali J Angmo has said the planned march to Parliament on July 20 will go ahead despite the climate activist being taken to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on health grounds. She said that if Wangchuk is unable to participate due to his health condition, she will lead the march herself. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Angmo said Wangchuk was shifted from the protest site at Jantar Mantar to the hospital without the consent of either him or his family. She maintained that his removal from the protest venue would not stop the planned demonstration and that supporters would continue with their scheduled march.

“Sonam Wangchuk was brought here from the Jantar Mantar site without informing him or without informing me,” Angmo said. She claimed that doctors from Safdarjung Hospital had examined Wangchuk the previous evening and found his vital signs to be normal. However, she said authorities later informed them that his potassium levels had dropped and that the situation was serious. Angmo also questioned the circumstances surrounding the hospitalisation and alleged that medical reports related to Wangchuk’s condition were not being shared when requested. She sought greater transparency regarding his health status and the reasons behind the decision to shift him from the protest site.

Wangchuk had been on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar as part of his campaign on issues related to Ladakh, including demands for constitutional safeguards and greater protection for the region’s environment. His protest had entered its later stages when police officials moved him to the hospital citing concerns over his deteriorating health. The planned July 20 march to Parliament is expected to involve Wangchuk’s supporters and activists who have been backing his demands. Angmo said the demonstration would continue regardless of Wangchuk’s medical condition, indicating that she would take responsibility for leading the march if required.

The police action at Jantar Mantar has drawn criticism from some activists and supporters, who questioned the manner in which Wangchuk was removed from the protest site. Authorities, however, have maintained that the step was taken due to medical concerns and to ensure his safety after a prolonged hunger strike. The development comes as Wangchuk’s protest has gained attention nationally, with supporters highlighting issues related to environmental protection, local representation, and the future of Ladakh.

His campaign has attracted participation from civil society members and individuals concerned about the region’s ecological and administrative challenges. As of now, Wangchuk remains under medical observation at Safdarjung Hospital. His supporters are awaiting further updates on his health condition, while organisers have reiterated that the planned march will proceed as scheduled. The coming days are expected to determine whether Wangchuk will be able to participate personally in the Parliament march or whether leadership of the demonstration will pass to his wife and other members of the movement.
