Jindal Steel Commissions India’s Largest Blast Furnace at Angul Plant

Jindal Steel doubles capacity with mega blast furnace at Angul plant.

Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) marked a transformative milestone by commissioning a 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) blast furnace at its Angul facility in Odisha. Named the Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace, this state-of-the-art structure, with an inner volume of 5,499 cubic meters, ranks among India’s largest. The commissioning is a cornerstone of JSPL’s ambitious over Rs 20,000 crore expansion project, which aims to elevate the Angul plant’s steel production capacity from 6 MTPA to 12 MTPA, reinforcing India’s position in the global steel market and aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Angul plant, a flagship operation of JSPL, already houses cutting-edge infrastructure, including India’s largest existing 4.25 MTPA blast furnace, a 3 MTPA Basic Oxygen Furnace, and the world’s first coal gasification-based 2 MTPA Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant for steelmaking.

The new furnace will boost hot metal production to 9 MTPA, enabling the plant to achieve its 12 MTPA steel output target by early 2026. This expansion leverages advanced technologies to enhance efficiency and sustainability, supported by JSPL’s access to high-grade iron ore from its 7.5 MTPA Kasia mine and innovative logistics solutions like slurry pipelines and coal conveyor systems.

JSPL Chairman Naveen Jindal, who personally officiated the furnace’s ceremonial "blow-in," described the achievement as a fusion of cultural heritage and modern innovation. “Commissioning the Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace at Angul is a proud moment for Jindal Steel and for India.

By doubling Angul’s capacity to 12 MTPA, we are strengthening our global competitiveness and reaffirming our commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat,” Jindal stated. The project not only enhances India’s steel production capabilities but also generates significant employment opportunities in Odisha, contributing to the region’s socio-economic development.

As part of the Naveen Jindal Group, a global conglomerate with interests in steel, energy, and mining, JSPL is positioning the Angul plant to become the world’s largest single-location integrated steel facility by 2030, targeting a 25.2 MTPA liquid steel capacity. The expansion includes supporting infrastructure such as a dedicated port at Paradeep, a slurry pipeline from Barbil, and the Shreebhoomi Power Plant.

Producing high-value products like TMT rebars, structural plates, and specialized grades for shipbuilding, automotive, and nuclear applications, JSPL is driving India’s industrial growth while championing sustainable practices and economic self-reliance.
