Jeff Dean Resigns From Google, Launches AI Startup Discovery Loop

Jeff Dean, chief scientist at Google DeepMind and Google Research, has announced his departure after 27 years at Google to establish an artificial intelligence startup focused on scientific and engineering research. He will launch the venture with Indian-American technology veteran Sanjay Ghemawat and prominent AI researchers Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le.

Dean joined Google in 1999 as its 30th employee, when the company reportedly had about 25 people working from a small office. He witnessed its transformation into a global technology company employing more than 190,000 people. During his tenure, Dean helped develop several of Google’s foundational computing systems and later assumed a leading role in the company’s artificial intelligence research.

Dean and Ghemawat worked together at Google for nearly three decades and jointly developed distributed computing systems including MapReduce and Bigtable. These technologies became important components of large-scale data processing and helped shape the infrastructure underlying modern cloud computing. Ghemawat, who served as a Google Senior Fellow, will now reunite with Dean for the new venture.

Named Discovery Loop, the startup has been organised as a public benefit corporation. It aims to apply artificial intelligence to automate experimental processes across science and engineering. According to WIRED, its founders plan to develop AI systems capable of proposing, conducting and evaluating thousands of experiments simultaneously, potentially accelerating research and shortening development cycles.

In a farewell message shared with colleagues and published on X, Dean expressed gratitude for his time at Google and reflected on the company’s growth. He said his childhood ambition was to help create software used by millions of people, noting that Google now operates 13 products with more than one billion active users each. Rather than retiring, he will focus on building Discovery Loop with his long-time collaborators.

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai thanked Dean publicly for his contributions over nearly three decades. Pichai also confirmed that Google would support Discovery Loop as an investor and cloud-computing partner. The arrangement allows Dean to pursue an independent research venture while maintaining a connection with the company whose computing and AI systems he helped shape.
