Jammu And Kashmir Hit By Flash Floods As Heavy Rains Block Areas

Heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district has triggered flash floods in Beerwah and Khag areas, causing damage to homes, marketplaces, roads, and essential services. A local resident, identified as Shabir Ahmad Poswal, was swept away in Khag and is feared dead, while no other immediate casualties have been reported from the affected area. Rescue operations were launched as authorities responded to the impact of rising water levels and flooding.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and other security personnel were deployed to carry out rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected regions. The heavy flow of water caused damage to local infrastructure, including the temporary alternate road connecting Beerwah with Budgam and Khansahib, which was washed away. Several drinking water pipelines were also damaged, disrupting water supplies in parts of the area.

According to officials, rescue teams have been working to assist residents and minimise losses caused by the flash floods. A civil defence warden said teams had been on alert since Monday and were mobilised after a Red Alert was issued for Kashmir on Wednesday due to worsening weather conditions. Authorities have continued monitoring vulnerable locations as rainfall and thunderstorms persist across the region.

Relief efforts were also affected by structural damage in the flood-hit areas. A civil defence official said teams attempted to recover goods from damaged shops, but a sudden building collapse disrupted the operation. The official added that despite efforts to save belongings, much of the stock could not be recovered, resulting in financial losses running into crores for local traders.

The latest flooding adds to the growing weather-related challenges faced by Jammu and Kashmir, where continuous rainfall has increased the risk of flash floods and landslides. Authorities are closely monitoring water levels in rivers and streams while maintaining preparedness for emergency situations. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain cautious and follow instructions issued by local administrations.

With more rainfall and thunderstorms expected in parts of the region, disaster management teams remain on standby to respond to any further emergencies. Officials are focusing on restoring damaged infrastructure, providing assistance to affected communities, and ensuring the safety of residents as weather conditions continue to be monitored.
