Iran Targets Sixth Vessel in Strait Of Hormuz; Global Shipping on Alert

Iran targets another vessel in Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over global oil supply routes.

Iran’s state-run media on Monday claimed that a sixth vessel had been targeted in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, releasing video footage showing thick smoke billowing from a ship. The reported strike comes amid sharply escalating tensions after Tehran declared the waterway closed. The closure was announced in retaliation for recent airstrikes by the United States and Israel. The situation has heightened concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.

According to Iranian announcements on Sunday, no vessel has the right to transit through the narrow strait. The channel serves as a crucial passage for nearly a fifth of global oil and gas supplies. Officials described the closure as a response to Saturday’s coordinated air strikes. During those strikes, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior military officers were reported killed. The developments have intensified fears of a wider regional confrontation.

Shipping activity in the region has been severely disrupted following the escalation. Major global shipping lines suspended voyages through the strait, citing safety risks to crew and cargo. On Sunday afternoon, a Palau-flagged oil tanker under US sanctions reportedly came under missile attack while sailing near Oman. The reported strike added to uncertainty surrounding commercial navigation in nearby waters. Industry observers are closely monitoring further developments.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, making it one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints. Any prolonged disruption could significantly affect global energy markets and supply chains. Analysts warn that sustained hostilities may drive oil price volatility and insurance costs higher. Governments and energy firms are assessing contingency plans to mitigate potential supply shocks. The unfolding crisis continues to draw international attention.
