IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers Resigns, MD Rahul Bhatia Takes Charge Immediately

Elbers' exit comes three months after IndiGo faced major operational disruptions across its network.

IndiGo announced on Tuesday that its chief executive officer, Pieter Elbers, has stepped down from his position with immediate effect. The development comes a few months after the airline faced significant operational disruptions that had drawn attention to its management and service operations. Following the resignation, the airline’s managing director, Rahul Bhatia, will temporarily oversee the company’s affairs until a new CEO is appointed.

In an official statement, the airline confirmed that Pieter Elbers would be leaving his role immediately. The Board of Directors thanked him for his contribution and service to the organisation and extended their best wishes for his future. Elbers had been leading the airline during a period of rapid expansion and increasing competition in the Indian aviation market.

The airline further stated that Rahul Bhatia will take charge of the company’s management in the interim period. As one of the founders of IndiGo and its current managing director, Bhatia will guide the airline’s operations until the company announces a new leader. According to the statement, the search for a successor is expected to conclude soon.

Chairman of the board Vikram Singh Mehta said Bhatia’s return to oversee management is aimed at strengthening the company’s internal culture and reinforcing operational standards. The leadership transition, he said, is intended to ensure the airline maintains its focus on reliability, customer care, and professionalism in its services.

Rahul Bhatia also addressed the leadership change, emphasising his commitment to the airline’s long-term vision. He noted that after more than two decades of building and nurturing IndiGo, he feels a strong sense of responsibility toward the airline’s customers, employees, shareholders, and other stakeholders. Bhatia added that the company will continue prioritising service quality and operational reliability.

IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation, is currently India’s largest airline by market share. The company said it will continue focusing on strengthening its strategic goals while ensuring consistent service for passengers across its expanding domestic and international network as it prepares to appoint a new chief executive.
