India’s Rs 25,000 Crore Export Mission Set for Cabinet Nod to Strengthen Global Trade

Union Cabinet set to approve Rs 25,000 crore Export Promotion Mission to boost Indian exports.

The Union Cabinet is expected to approve the much-awaited Export Promotion Mission (EPM) on Wednesday, sources told NDTV Profit. The proposed mission includes an estimated financial outlay of Rs 25,000 crore spread over six years and is designed to strengthen India’s export ecosystem, shield domestic businesses from global trade uncertainty, and fuel long-term export growth.

Originally announced in the Union Budget, the Export Promotion Mission is part of the central government’s broader push to make Indian exports more resilient against volatile global conditions. The initiative is structured to tackle existing bottlenecks such as limited credit access, logistics inefficiencies, and export quality gaps while encouraging sectoral competitiveness. Officials said the program’s approval marks one of the largest coordinated trade missions in recent years aimed at promoting India’s global trade position.

According to sources, the EPM will function through a dual-framework approach. One component focuses on expanding export credit availability to ensure adequate liquidity for exporters, especially small and medium enterprises that often struggle to access low-cost financing. The second component centers on improving product quality, certification, and market diversification to help Indian exporters compete effectively in emerging and mature markets.

The move comes at a time when Indian exports have faced multiple challenges such as weak global demand, trade route disruptions, and currency fluctuations. Despite these headwinds, India’s merchandise exports touched nearly $450 billion in FY25, while the services export sector remained robust. The government’s renewed emphasis on structural trade reform is seen as an effort to sustain this momentum and reach the medium-term goal of $2 trillion in combined goods and services exports by 2030.

The EPM’s structure is also expected to align with other ongoing trade facilitation programs, including the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) initiatives. Officials said the mission would promote better coordination among key export promotion councils and trade bodies, ensuring that the support package effectively addresses sector-specific needs. Once approved, the mission will be overseen jointly by the Ministry of Commerce and the Department of Financial Services, ensuring both trade expansion and smoother credit delivery.
