Indian Vessel Virat 1 Sinks After Engine Failure, Crew Rescued Off Oman Coast

Indian crew safely rescued after vessel suffers engine failure off Oman.

At least 14 Indian crew members were safely evacuated after an Indian-flagged vessel, identified as Mechanised Sailing Vessel (MSV) Virat 1, suffered a major engine failure off the coast of Oman, authorities said on Sunday. The vessel later sank following the incident, prompting a coordinated rescue operation involving Omani authorities and nearby ships operating in the region.

According to the Indian Embassy in Oman, the emergency began when the vessel encountered a technical failure while at sea, leaving it stranded in the waters off the Omani coast. The mission said it was immediately informed of the distress situation involving the Indian-flagged ship carrying 14 Indian nationals, and search-and-rescue efforts were launched in coordination with local maritime agencies and vessels in proximity.

Reports suggest that as the situation deteriorated, the crew was forced to abandon the vessel and move into a life raft deployed with the assistance of a maritime patrol unit. The evacuation was carried out under challenging conditions at sea, but officials confirmed that all crew members were successfully transferred to safety before the vessel eventually went down.

The embassy later clarified that the initial distress was caused by an engine malfunction, and that the evacuation process was completed without loss of life. It added that rescue operations continued to be coordinated with Omani authorities to ensure the safe recovery and well-being of all crew members involved in the incident.

Local media reports, including Muscat-based publications, described the situation as an active maritime emergency at the time of the evacuation, with search and rescue teams closely monitoring developments. Authorities have not yet reported any casualties, and the focus remains on stabilising the situation and assessing the condition of the rescued crew members.

The incident comes amid heightened concern over maritime safety in the Gulf region, following a series of recent tensions involving commercial shipping routes in the Gulf of Oman. However, officials have clarified that the MSV Virat 1 incident is unrelated to earlier reports involving attacks on vessels carrying Indian crew members in the region, which had triggered diplomatic exchanges between India and the United States.
