Indian UHNIs Increasingly Opt For Overseas Residency and Citizenship Programmes

Indian ultra-rich families increasingly seek overseas residency as long-term wealth strategy.

India’s ultra-high-net-worth families are increasingly exploring overseas residency and citizenship as part of long-term wealth, succession and family planning. Investment immigration is no longer limited to people seeking foreign education or expanding businesses, with wealthy families also considering a second country as a backup option for future generations.

The growing interest is being driven by several factors, including geopolitical uncertainty, changing tax environments, international business opportunities and lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic. For some wealthy families, overseas residency can offer greater freedom of movement, while others see it as a potential retirement destination or a way to give their children easier access to international education and employment.

Entrepreneurs, senior corporate executives and business owners are among those exploring investment migration programmes. The options being considered include the US, Portugal, Greece, the UAE and several Caribbean countries. Depending on the programme, applicants may gain permanent residency, citizenship or long-term residence rights, potentially providing greater flexibility for travel, education, healthcare and future relocation.

India has also emerged as a major source market for investment immigration globally. Indian families are reportedly among significant applicants to programmes such as the US EB-5 Immigrant Investor Programme. Greater clarity and transparency in some investment migration schemes have also contributed to interest, while wealthy business families increasingly view international mobility as part of broader wealth and succession planning.

Demand is also spreading beyond traditional centres such as Mumbai and Delhi. Gujarat is emerging as an important market, helped by its large community of entrepreneurs whose businesses increasingly operate internationally. As business interests become more global, some owners are also considering where their children will study, where their families could live and how their wealth can be structured across different jurisdictions.

For India’s super-rich, securing overseas residency or citizenship does not necessarily mean permanently leaving the country. Instead, it can provide an additional option if circumstances change in the future. The growing interest suggests that global mobility is increasingly being viewed as an asset in itself, giving affluent families greater choice over where they can live, work, study and plan for future generations.
