India, US Launch Two-Day Ministerial Talks To Strengthen Bilateral Trade Relations
India and US officials discuss trade pact this week
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will hold ministerial-level discussions in New Delhi this week as India and the United States intensify efforts to finalize the first phase of a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The two-day meeting is expected to focus on resolving outstanding issues and giving final shape to the framework of the trade pact, which both sides hope to conclude in the coming weeks. The talks come amid growing economic and strategic cooperation between the world's largest and fifth-largest economies.
Confirming the development, Goyal told reporters in Mumbai that his US counterpart would be arriving in Delhi for negotiations related to the trade agreement. The meeting follows a round of chief negotiator-level discussions held in the national capital from June 2 to June 4, during which officials from both countries worked on narrowing differences across a range of trade-related issues. The latest ministerial engagement is expected to build on the progress achieved during those negotiations and help accelerate the path toward an interim agreement.
According to Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, discussions between the two ministers are likely to focus on providing the final touches to the framework deal. Officials have indicated that substantial progress has already been made on several aspects of the proposed agreement, although some issues remain under discussion. The ministerial talks are expected to play a crucial role in bridging any remaining gaps and establishing a roadmap for the implementation of the first phase of the BTA.

Earlier this month, Goyal expressed confidence about the pace of negotiations, stating that India and the United States were moving steadily toward closing all pending issues in the interim trade agreement. He said both countries were likely to execute the first phase of the BTA by the middle of next month, describing it as a “very, very vibrant” agreement. The statement reflected optimism within both governments that a mutually beneficial deal can be reached despite the complexity of trade negotiations involving market access, tariffs, and regulatory concerns.
The proposed trade pact is expected to strengthen economic ties between New Delhi and Washington by facilitating greater market access for businesses, encouraging investment, and enhancing bilateral trade. India and the United States have witnessed a steady expansion in commercial relations over the past decade, with bilateral trade in goods and services reaching record levels. Both governments have repeatedly emphasized the importance of leveraging their economic partnership to support growth, innovation, and job creation.
The upcoming talks are being closely watched by industry stakeholders and policymakers in both countries, as the outcome could shape the future trajectory of India-US economic engagement. A successful conclusion of the first phase of the BTA would mark a significant milestone in bilateral relations and could pave the way for a broader and more comprehensive trade agreement in the future. With negotiators having already completed several rounds of discussions, the ministerial meeting is expected to provide the political momentum needed to move the agreement closer to completion.
