India To Attend G7 Meeting With US, Gulf Countries On Free Navigation
Talks will focus on maritime security and regional stability.
India is set to participate in a high-level discussion on West Asia during the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, joining the United States and key Gulf nations as concerns over regional stability and maritime security continue to command international attention. The meeting is expected to take place on the sidelines of the summit and will focus on safeguarding critical sea lanes that are vital to global trade and energy supplies.
According to reports, leaders from India, the United States, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates are expected to attend the discussion. The talks are likely to center on ensuring free navigation and the uninterrupted movement of commercial vessels through strategic maritime corridors at a time when geopolitical tensions in West Asia have heightened concerns about disruptions to international shipping routes.
Diplomatic sources indicated that while India is not directly involved in ongoing conflicts in the region, developments in West Asia have significant economic and strategic consequences for countries around the world. The security of major sea routes remains particularly important for India, which relies heavily on maritime trade and energy imports passing through the region. Participants are expected to exchange views on maintaining stability and preventing disruptions that could impact global markets.

The discussions also underscore India's growing diplomatic profile on the international stage. France, which invited India to participate in the summit's engagements, reportedly views New Delhi as a priority strategic partner. Sources noted that India has been included across multiple G7 discussions, reflecting its increasing influence in global affairs and its role in addressing major international challenges.
French diplomatic officials highlighted the strong level of trust that characterizes relations between India and France. They pointed to India's leadership in multilateral forums, including its previous presidency of the G20 and its current chairmanship of BRICS, as evidence of New Delhi's expanding role in shaping international dialogue. Officials also noted that many of India's policy solutions and development initiatives have relevance beyond its borders.
On the defence front, French sources described bilateral cooperation as an equal partnership rather than a conventional buyer-seller relationship. Future collaborations, they said, are expected to focus on technology sharing, manufacturing partnerships, and support for India's "Make in India" initiative. The discussions at the G7 Summit are therefore expected to reinforce not only regional security cooperation but also broader strategic partnerships among participating nations.
