India Locks in EU Export Rights For Honey, Eggs and Fish in Major Trade Victory

India gains continued EU market access for honey, eggs, and fishery exports.

India has secured continued access to the European Union market for several key agricultural and animal-origin products after being included in the bloc's updated list of authorized exporting countries. The decision allows Indian exporters of aquaculture products, eggs, honey, and animal casings to continue supplying these goods to EU member states beyond September 2026, providing a significant boost to multiple export-oriented sectors.

The approval follows amendments made by the European Commission under Regulation (EU) 2026/1189, which revises the framework governing imports of certain animal-origin products into the European Union. The updated rules introduce additional requirements related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), an issue that has become an increasing focus of food safety and public health policies across Europe. India's inclusion on the authorized list confirms that the country's regulatory systems meet the necessary standards under the revised framework.

The development is particularly important for India's fisheries industry, which has established a strong presence in European markets. According to government data, exports of fish and fishery products from India to the European Union are currently valued at approximately $1.59 billion. Continued market access is expected to provide stability for exporters, processors, and producers who rely on European demand for a significant portion of their business.

Government agencies played a crucial role in securing the approval. The Department of Commerce and the Export Inspection Council (EIC) engaged extensively with European authorities to demonstrate compliance with the updated requirements. The EIC also strengthened its inspection, testing, and certification mechanisms to align with EU regulations, ensuring that Indian products continue to meet international quality and safety standards.

Officials said the Department of Commerce, EIC, and other stakeholders, including the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), will work closely with EU-approved establishments and regulatory bodies to implement the new requirements. The coordinated effort is expected to support exporters in maintaining compliance while taking advantage of future opportunities in European markets.

The decision comes against the backdrop of growing economic ties between India and the European Union, including the recently concluded India-EU Free Trade Agreement. The landmark pact aims to deepen trade and investment relations between the two economies and is expected to create new opportunities across a range of sectors. By ensuring uninterrupted access for products such as fish, honey, eggs, and animal casings, the latest EU approval is likely to strengthen India's export competitiveness and support long-term growth in agricultural and food-processing industries.
