India and Indonesia strengthen defence cooperation through BrahMos.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defence cooperation, with a particular focus on collaboration involving the BrahMos Missile System and the Air-to-Air Missile Cooperation Agreement. The announcement was made in the India-Indonesia Joint Statement following bilateral discussions, reflecting the growing strategic partnership between the two countries in defence, security, and maritime cooperation.
The two leaders identified defence industry and technology as priority areas for future collaboration and agreed to expand cooperation through joint production of defence equipment, technology transfer, technical assistance, and capacity building. They also discussed enhancing defence manufacturing by promoting sourcing of military equipment, cooperation in shipbuilding, establishment of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, exploration of joint defence research and development, and strengthening the defence supply chain ecosystem.
Prime Minister Modi and President Prabowo also welcomed progress in pharmaceutical cooperation between the armed forces of both countries, particularly in the supply of military medicines. They agreed to deepen engagement across both traditional and emerging areas of defence cooperation, including regular defence dialogues, joint military exercises, staff-level talks, co-development of new defence technologies, peacekeeping activities, hydrography, information sharing, cadet training programmes, and defence industrial partnerships.

Highlighting the importance of maritime security, both leaders acknowledged the strategic value of joint naval exercises and defence training programmes. They agreed to further strengthen existing naval cooperation and continue constructive discussions on maritime issues of mutual interest in accordance with their respective national laws and international law, including the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The joint statement also emphasised continued cooperation in Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), maritime connectivity, coastal surveillance, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), pollution control, and Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. Both countries noted that these initiatives would contribute to regional peace, security, and stability across the Indo-Pacific while enhancing their ability to respond to shared maritime challenges.
As part of the expanding partnership, the two leaders welcomed the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Safety and Security Cooperation and the signing of an implementing arrangement between Indonesia’s Maritime Security Agency (BAKAMLA RI) and the Indian Coast Guard. The agreements are expected to further strengthen operational coordination and reinforce the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and Indonesia across defence, maritime security, and regional cooperation.
