India Hails US‑Iran Truce, Stresses Unimpeded Freedom Of Navigation At Hormuz
India welcomes ceasefire, urges unimpeded navigation through Hormuz.
India on Wednesday welcomed a newly announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that the development will help restore stability in West Asia and ensure uninterrupted maritime trade through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement affirming India’s support for diplomatic efforts to ease tensions after weeks of conflict that had disrupted oil shipments and global markets.
In its official release, the MEA underscored India’s expectation that the ceasefire will facilitate “unimpeded freedom of navigation” through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but vital waterway through which around a fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied gas exports transit. Free passage through the strait has been a major concern for New Delhi due to its dependence on Middle Eastern energy supplies.
The central government also expressed optimism that the short-term ceasefire could be a stepping stone toward broader and more durable peace in the region. Officials highlighted that reduced hostilities may help alleviate risks to commercial shipping and ease pressure on global energy markets, which have seen volatility in recent weeks.

The call for secure navigation comes amid reports that, under terms of the ceasefire framework announced by US leadership, Iran may permit safe passage through the strait for an initial period if attacks cease, a concession aimed at de‑escalating the situation and restarting vital maritime flows.
India’s foreign policy has maintained a position of neutrality throughout the tensions, urging diplomatic dialogue and stability while safeguarding national economic interests tied to energy supply routes. In recent weeks, New Delhi has also reportedly considered measures to protect its merchant vessels in the region and engaged in diplomatic talks with Gulf partners to manage risks.
Observers say India’s emphasis on navigational freedom reflects long‑standing concerns over energy security and international law governing maritime transit. As the ceasefire unfolds, New Delhi’s statements aim to balance support for peace with pragmatic advocacy for uninterrupted trade and maritime safety.
