India-Canada Ties Revived: Leaders Commit to Collaboration Across Trade And Education

India and Canada to resume ministerial talks, expanding trade, energy, technology, and education cooperation.

India and Canada have agreed to take concrete steps to revive and deepen their bilateral relationship across trade, investment, energy, and technology. The announcement follows talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, who is on an official visit to India. In a joint statement, both ministers said the visit follows guidance from Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Mark Carney during their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, aimed at restoring stability in the bilateral relationship.

The ministers highlighted steps already taken, including the reinstatement of High Commissioners on August 28, 2025, and enhanced security cooperation on September 18, 2025. They also noted ongoing senior-level discussions on law enforcement and previous consultations at the UN General Assembly in New York. These initiatives are intended to build a constructive partnership grounded in respect for each other’s concerns, strong people-to-people ties, and growing economic complementarities.

Both countries agreed to launch ministerial-level discussions on trade and investment in the near future, reflecting global economic realities and strategic priorities. Bilateral trade stood at $23.66 billion in 2024, and plans include resuming the Canada-India CEO Forum and hosting a senior-level trade mission in early 2026.

Key focus areas include clean technology, agri-food, infrastructure, and digital innovation. Cooperation will also expand in renewable energy, climate action, and critical minerals, including reviving the Ministerial Energy Dialogue and convening the first Critical Minerals Annual Dialogue in Toronto in March 2026.

Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Anita Anand, welcoming her visit as a boost to bilateral engagement and emphasizing cooperation in trade, energy, technology, agriculture, and people-to-people relations.
