Naidu Presents Ambitious Amaravati Plans to Sixteenth Finance Commission

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu showcased the TDP-led NDA government’s vision for the greenfield capital city of Amaravati to the Sixteenth Finance Commission on Wednesday, emphasizing its role in the state’s development.

During a presentation at the state secretariat, Naidu played a video highlighting the city’s master plan, which includes seven sub-cities—government, justice, finance, knowledge, health, sports, and tourism—spanning 217 sq km between Vijayawada and Guntur. A photo exhibition also displayed progress on Amaravati, the Polavaram Project, and the Polavaram-Banakacherla interlinking project.

Naidu outlined the state’s Swarna Andhra 2047 vision, investment-friendly policies, and the need for central funds to revive Amaravati, stalled from 2019 to 2024 under the YSRCP regime. With 34,241 acres pooled from 29,881 farmers and Rs 37,702 crore in projects underway, Naidu aims to complete the city by 2028, backed by Rs 15,000 crore from the Centre, World Bank, HUDCO, and ADB. He addressed cost escalations of Rs 7,000 crore due to past delays, projecting a total cost of Rs 52,000 crore.

Led by chairman Arvind Panagariya, the commission, on a four-day visit from April 15-18, met Naidu and will engage political parties today before an official dinner in Vijayawada.

On Thursday, it heads to Tirupati to meet local bodies and industry representatives, concluding with a temple visit on Friday. Naidu’s pitch underscores Amaravati’s potential as an economic hub, seeking robust financial support.
