IMD Issues Heatwave Alerts For 25 Districts In Madhya Pradesh
Severe heatwave conditions grip Madhya Pradesh, triggering alerts in 25 districts.
Madhya Pradesh is witnessing an intense and prolonged heatwave, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages and touching as high as 45.8 degrees Celsius in several regions. The extreme weather conditions have prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue heatwave alerts across 25 districts, warning residents of continued harsh conditions in the coming days.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Bhopal, western parts of the state have been recording maximum temperatures between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius, while eastern regions are experiencing even higher temperatures ranging from 43 to 45 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature of 45.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Khajuraho and Naugaon, highlighting the severity of the heatwave gripping the region.
Officials confirmed that heatwave conditions have already been declared in districts such as Khajuraho, Datia, and Naugaon, with forecasts suggesting that most parts of Madhya Pradesh will continue to experience temperatures between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists have warned that these readings are significantly above normal for this time of year, indicating a strong and sustained heatwave pattern across the state.

In addition to the soaring temperatures, isolated weather disturbances have also been reported in some parts of the state. Thunderstorms and light rainfall were recorded in districts including Badwani, Burhanpur, Dewas, and Dhar, while dust storms were reported in Dewas, South Khargone, and South Sehore over the past 24 hours. Despite these sporadic events, the overall heat intensity remains high across most regions.
The IMD has issued heatwave warnings for a large number of districts, including Satna, Panna, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Jabalpur, Bhopal, Indore-adjacent regions, Gwalior, and several others spanning northern, eastern, and western Madhya Pradesh. Heat index maps for May 25 and 26 indicate dangerous discomfort levels in many areas, with red-zone alerts highlighting severe heatwave risk in northern and eastern districts.
Authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures, advising people to avoid outdoor exposure during peak hours between noon and 4 p.m., stay adequately hydrated, and wear light, breathable clothing. Special advisories have also been issued for vulnerable groups such as children, elderly individuals, and those with pre-existing health conditions, as they face a higher risk of heat-related illnesses.
Farmers and outdoor labourers have been advised to adjust their working hours to early morning or late evening to minimise exposure to extreme heat. With major festivals such as Ganga Dussehra and Bakrid approaching, officials are also expected to release additional safety guidelines for public gatherings at temples, ghats, and other crowded spaces.
Meteorological officials have cautioned that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist over the next several days, with little immediate relief in sight. Residents have been urged to remain alert, follow official advisories closely, and take all necessary precautions to prevent heatstroke and other heat-related health emergencies.
