IATA Projects Asia-Pacific Air Passenger Traffic To Reach 4.1 Billion By 2044
Asia-Pacific aviation growth set to surge with India as key market.
India is expected to play a significant role in the rapid expansion of the aviation sector in the Asia-Pacific region over the next two decades, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The global airline body has projected strong and sustained growth in passenger traffic across the region, driven by rising demand, economic expansion and increasing connectivity.
The IATA said that air passenger traffic in the Asia-Pacific region stood at 1.7 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow by an additional 2.4 billion travellers over the next 20 years, taking the total to around 4.1 billion by 2044. The forecast highlights the region as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally, with India expected to be a key contributor to this growth trajectory.
Speaking on the outlook, IATA’s Vice-President for Asia-Pacific Sheldon Hee said that several major airports in the region, including those in India and Singapore, are expected to significantly expand their capacities in the coming years. He noted that airports such as Changi and Delhi are likely to scale up operations to handle up to 100 million passengers annually as demand continues to rise.

India, in particular, has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing domestic aviation markets, supported by rising incomes, expanding middle-class travel demand and improved airport infrastructure. Industry officials have consistently pointed to India’s increasing fleet size, new airport developments and regional connectivity schemes as key drivers of sustained growth in the sector.
Hee further stated that the Asia-Pacific region has witnessed strong aviation growth over the past five to ten years and is expected to maintain this momentum in the next decade. The expansion is being fuelled by both domestic and international travel demand, as well as ongoing investments in airport modernisation and air traffic management systems.
The projected growth in passenger traffic is also expected to place greater emphasis on infrastructure development, operational efficiency and sustainability measures across the aviation industry. With India positioned as a major growth hub, the country’s aviation sector is likely to play an increasingly central role in shaping regional air connectivity and global travel patterns in the years ahead.
