HAL Chief Affirms Tejas Jet’s Safety After Dubai Airshow Crash

HAL Chief says Tejas remains safe despite Dubai Airshow crash.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Chairman and Managing Director DK Sunil has assured that there is “absolutely no problem” with the Tejas light combat aircraft, describing it as “absolutely safe” despite the recent tragic crash at the Dubai Airshow 2025. The incident occurred during a complex aerobatic maneuver on November 21, resulting in the loss of Wing Commander Namansh Syal, marking the first fatal accident involving the Tejas since its induction into the Indian Air Force a decade ago.

Speaking at the ANI National Security Summit, Sunil emphasized Tejas’ strong safety record and stated that the Dubai crash was an “unfortunate incident” that will have no bearing on the aircraft’s future or HAL's capabilities. He highlighted HAL’s successes in developing indigenous aircraft and helicopters, asserting that occasional setbacks are expected with homegrown technology but do not undermine confidence in the program or the industry.

Addressing public concerns, Sunil acknowledged the impact of social media opinion but stood firm on the aircraft's reliability, pointing to HAL-built platforms like the HTT-40 trainer and other helicopters widely used across India. He reassured that neither HAL nor the Indian armed forces harbor self-doubt about their aerospace capabilities and that the commitment to indigenous development remains strong.

Regarding export plans, Sunil indicated that HAL is actively pursuing the global market as part of the government’s vision to become a defence manufacturing powerhouse. With orders for 180 Tejas aircraft already underway, he expressed optimism about future exports despite previous delays caused by engine supply from General Electric Aerospace. The company remains focused on enhancing Tejas’ role within India’s air fleet and expanding its international footprint.
