Government Develops Dedicated FASTags For Toll-Exempt Users Under MLFF Tolling System

The government develops special FASTags for toll-exempt vehicles under the MLFF system.

The central government is planning to introduce a special category of FASTags for toll-exempt vehicles as part of the nationwide rollout of the Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling System on national highways. The move is aimed at ensuring seamless travel for authorized vehicles, including those belonging to defense personnel and select government agencies, under the upcoming AI-driven toll collection framework.

According to reports, the proposed system will allow exempted vehicles to pass through automated toll corridors without deductions or being mistakenly flagged for violations. Officials familiar with the development said the initiative is intended to address operational challenges likely to arise as India transitions from traditional toll plazas to a fully digital and barrier-free highway network. The system is expected to rely heavily on artificial intelligence and automatic number plate recognition technology for vehicle identification and toll processing.

Under the new MLFF mechanism, vehicles will no longer need to stop at physical toll booths. Instead, overhead gantries equipped with cameras and sensors will automatically detect vehicle movement and process toll payments digitally through FASTag-linked accounts. Authorities believe the shift will significantly reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and cut travel time across major national highways.

Government officials are reportedly working on a dedicated FASTag category to distinguish exempted vehicles from regular commuters within the automated system. The proposed arrangement may either recognize such vehicles instantly through integrated databases or provide reimbursement mechanisms where required. The objective is to avoid wrongful deductions and ensure smooth passage for emergency and official vehicles, particularly those connected to defense and critical public services.

The transition to MLFF tolling is considered one of the most significant changes in India’s highway infrastructure and transport management system in recent years. Authorities have increasingly focused on using digital technologies, data analytics, and AI-based monitoring to modernize road networks and enhance efficiency in toll collection. The new system is also expected to reduce fuel wastage caused by long queues at toll plazas and improve transparency in toll operations.

The Centre has been gradually expanding FASTag-based toll collection since making it mandatory for most vehicles on national highways. The proposed MLFF rollout is expected to build on that framework while introducing more advanced automation and surveillance technologies. Officials are still finalizing operational details, including protocols for exempted vehicles, before the system is implemented on a wider scale across India’s highway network.
