Google Limits Meta’s Access to Gemini AI Amid Reported Capacity Shortfall

Google reportedly restricts Meta’s Gemini AI usage due to capacity issues.

Google has reportedly restricted Meta’s access to its Gemini artificial intelligence models due to a shortage of computing capacity, highlighting growing pressure on cloud infrastructure amid the global AI boom. The reported move comes as tech companies face increasing demand for high-performance computing resources needed to train and run advanced AI systems.

According to reports citing sources familiar with the matter, Google informed Meta around March that it would be unable to meet the full level of computing capacity the company had requested. The constraints are said to have impacted and delayed certain internal AI projects at Meta that relied on Google’s cloud infrastructure.

Google, owned by Alphabet, operates its Gemini AI models through its cloud platform, which is increasingly under strain due to rising demand from enterprise customers. While other clients have also faced some restrictions, reports suggest Meta was more significantly affected due to its large-scale usage requirements for AI development.

The limitation has reportedly led Meta to encourage more efficient use of AI resources internally, including reducing consumption of computing “tokens,” which are used to measure and manage AI model usage. The adjustment reflects broader efforts across the industry to optimise computing workloads amid infrastructure shortages.

The development underscores a wider challenge facing the global technology sector, as companies invest heavily in AI while competing for limited computing power. Despite major spending on data centres and advanced chips, supply constraints continue to slow deployment and expansion of AI services across platforms.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has previously acknowledged that capacity limitations have affected growth in Google Cloud, even as the unit reported strong revenue performance. The situation highlights the intensifying race among tech giants to secure sufficient infrastructure to support next-generation artificial intelligence systems.
