Goa Court Extends Police Custody of Nightclub Owners in Deadly Fire Case

A local court in Goa has extended the police custody of nightclub owners Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra by five days in connection with the tragic fire at their Birch by Romeo Lane establishment that claimed 25 lives on December 6, 2025. The siblings, accused of negligence leading to the disaster, were remanded further to facilitate ongoing investigations into safety violations and potential criminal culpability. Advocate Vishnu Joshi, representing victims' families, confirmed the court's decision, emphasizing the need for thorough probing. The extension allows authorities additional time to interrogate the accused and gather evidence amid mounting public outrage.
The fire broke out during a crowded event at the Panaji-based nightclub, rapidly engulfing the premises and trapping patrons inside. Preliminary reports pointed to overcrowding, blocked exits, and inadequate fire safety measures as contributing factors. The Luthra brothers allegedly fled to Thailand shortly after the incident, prompting an international manhunt. They were deported back to India on December 17 and arrested upon arrival, facing charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Victims' families have demanded stringent punishment, highlighting lapses in regulatory oversight for nightlife venues in the tourist hotspot. The case has intensified scrutiny on Goa's entertainment sector, known for vibrant parties but criticized for lax enforcement of safety norms. Police are examining compliance records, event permissions, and possible prior warnings ignored by the management.
