Giorgia Meloni Reflects On 2023 India Visit And Delhi Vote Remark
Meloni recalls remark about potential Delhi voter support.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has recalled a striking anecdote from her 2023 visit to India, describing how her arrival in New Delhi was marked by widespread public displays of welcome that left a strong impression on her and her delegation. The remarks are featured in her new book Giorgia’s Vision, based on conversations with journalist Alessandro Sallusti, where she reflects on diplomacy, leadership, and her experiences with global leaders.
Meloni describes how, upon arriving in New Delhi for official engagements, she saw her image displayed repeatedly along major roads, accompanied by messages of welcome. She noted that similar posters later appeared expressing gratitude after her visit concluded. The visual reception, she wrote, symbolised the warmth of her engagement with India and the significance of the diplomatic relationship between the two countries during her 2023 trip.
According to Meloni, the display prompted a light-hearted remark from Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, who accompanied her during the visit. He reportedly joked that the level of public attention was so high that she could win “a million votes” if she were to contest elections from a constituency in New Delhi. Meloni referenced the comment as an illustration of the memorable and unconventional moments that often occur during high-level diplomatic visits.

Meloni visited India twice in 2023—first for the Raisina Dialogue in March and later for the G20 Summit in September. In her reflections, she emphasises that effective diplomacy often extends beyond formal meetings and protocols, highlighting the importance of personal rapport, informal interactions, and shared human experiences in building international relationships.
In her book, Meloni also describes several informal exchanges with world leaders that helped strengthen diplomatic ties. These include conversations over shared interests, brief personal gestures, and relaxed moments during official visits. She suggests that such interactions often play a meaningful role in shaping trust and cooperation between nations, sometimes as much as formal negotiations.
Published as a series of conversations, Giorgia’s Vision explores broader themes of leadership, identity, and international relations. Through her reflections on India and other global engagements, Meloni presents diplomacy as a blend of formal statecraft and personal connection, where cultural impressions and small gestures can leave lasting diplomatic impact.
