Gaurav Gogoi Counts PM Modi's Nehru Mentions in Vande Mataram Lok Sabha Debate
Gaurav Gogoi hits out at PM Modi for frequent Nehru references during Vande Mataram debate.
A heated exchange unfolded in the Lok Sabha as Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi launched a sharp criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the House debate on Vande Mataram. Gogoi alleged that the Prime Minister invoked Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s name disproportionately in parliamentary debates, asserting that no attempt by the government could diminish Nehru’s contribution to the nation. He emphasized that the Congress, historically, was responsible for giving Vande Mataram its national prominence.
Detailing his accusations, Gogoi cited several parliamentary sessions where he claimed the Prime Minister repeatedly referenced Nehru and the Congress. He pointed out that during “Operation Sindoor,” Nehru was mentioned 14 times and Congress 50 times, while during the 75th anniversary of the Constitution, Nehru’s name appeared 10 times and Congress 26 times. Gogoi argued that such rhetoric detracts from current issues, insisting that “no matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to put even a single black mark on Pandit Nehru Ji’s contributions.”
The Congress leader further criticised the government for overlooking public suffering and security concerns. He expressed disappointment that the Prime Minister did not mention the Delhi blast or recent incidents in Pahalgam, asserting that citizens were feeling unsafe and struggling with environmental challenges. Gogoi urged the government to acknowledge these crises instead of relying on repeated political references to the past.

Earlier in the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered an extensive address on the historical significance of Vande Mataram, describing it as a “powerful mantra” that fuelled India’s freedom movement. He emphasised its cultural and spiritual roots, drawing parallels to ancient Vedic expressions and episodes from the Ramayana. According to the PM, Vande Mataram symbolised the nation’s collective resolve and strength during colonial rule, particularly during the 1905 partition of Bengal.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the divisive strategies of the British Empire, asserting that their attempt to break Bengal’s unity was defeated by the unifying spirit of Vande Mataram. He described the slogan as a call to sacrifice, courage, and national devotion, noting that the country stands at the crossroads of several major historical celebrations—including 75 years of the Constitution and the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, PM Modi declared that efforts were underway to “restore the glory” of Vande Mataram for future generations. He framed the slogan not merely as a symbol of political independence but as a timeless cultural heritage that continued to inspire millions. The clash of perspectives between the government and the Opposition set the tone for a charged parliamentary session, reflecting deep ideological divides over history, national identity, and contemporary governance.
