Floods Devastate Nanded, Villages Isolated

Three dead, several villages cut off by raging floods.

Torrential rains have unleashed chaos in Nanded district, central Maharashtra, claiming three lives and isolating multiple villages as rivers and streams overflowed, officials reported on Saturday. The relentless downpour, which began Friday and continued into the weekend, has triggered widespread flooding, submerging homes, damaging infrastructure, and disrupting connectivity across the region.

Nine tehsils—Kandhar, Mukhed, Loha, Hadgaon, Bhokar, Degloor, Mudkhed, Umri, and Naygaon—recorded ‘excess’ rainfall, with over 65 mm in 24 hours, according to a district administration release. The heavy rains caused tragic incidents, including the deaths of Shaikh Nasar (72) and Shaikh Hasina (68), who perished when a wall of their home collapsed at 4 am in Kot Bazaar village, Kandhar tehsil. In a separate incident, Premsingh Pawar (42) drowned after a school van was swept away by floodwaters while crossing a bridge on the Sindagi (Chikhli) to Bodhadi Budruk road. His body was later recovered.

The floods also claimed the lives of four cattle and caused significant damage to infrastructure. In Himayatnagar tehsil, the villages of Siranjani and Siloda were completely cut off due to swollen rivers. Floodwaters inundated 20 homes in Borgadi village, leaving residents stranded. In Degloor tehsil, Tup Shelgaon and Lakkha villages lost connectivity after water surged over a critical bridge. Similarly, a flooded nullah severed communication between Harfad and Harfad Tanda villages, while a damaged bridge isolated Sayalwadi, Chota Tanda, and Motha Tanda.

Local authorities are scrambling to respond, with rescue and relief operations underway to assist affected communities. The flooding has raised concerns about the region’s preparedness for extreme weather events, with damaged infrastructure complicating efforts to restore normalcy. As the rains persist, residents are bracing for further challenges, and officials are urging caution near swollen water bodies.

The Nanded district administration has promised aid to those affected, but the scale of the disaster has left many villagers stranded and anxious. With more rain forecast, the situation remains precarious, and the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed.
