Father and 9-Year-Old Daughter Die Crushed Under Falling Iron Plate at Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Site

Father and daughter killed instantly by falling metal plate at bullet train bridge site.

A man and his nine-year-old daughter were killed after being crushed by a massive metal plate that fell from an under-construction bridge at the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project site in a village near Surat on Sunday, police said. The incident occurred in Kathor village, where construction work was underway on a bridge spanning the Tapti River.

According to officials, the accident took place during the evening shift when a heavy iron plate, part of the bridge structure, suddenly broke loose from overhead machinery. The plate fell directly onto 35-year-old Mohsin Iqbal Sheikh and his daughter, Huma Mohsin Sheikh, who were fishing in the river below at the time. The impact was fatal, leaving the victims with no chance of survival, police said.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as local residents rushed to the spot in an attempt to help. However, the sheer weight of the metal plate made rescue efforts impossible. Both the father and daughter were declared dead at the site, highlighting the severity of the accident and the risks posed by heavy construction activity in public-access areas.

Personnel from the Uttran Police Station reached the location soon after the incident to secure the area and coordinate rescue operations. After a prolonged effort involving heavy equipment, the bodies were recovered from beneath the metal plate and sent for post-mortem examinations. Authorities temporarily halted work at the site following the incident.

The tragedy has raised serious concerns over safety measures at large infrastructure projects. Police have launched a formal investigation to determine whether safety protocols and equipment standards were properly followed by the contractors involved. Officials said contractors and project authorities are under scrutiny, and strict legal action will be initiated if negligence or violations of safety norms are established.
