Imran Khan 2024 Claim: "Asim Munir Would be Responsible if Anything Happens to me"

Imran Khan’s 2024 op-ed warns Asim Munir would be responsible for any harm.

Fears over the safety of imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan intensified on Friday as unconfirmed rumors of his death in custody spread rapidly on social media, prompting his supporters to stage sit-in protests outside Adiala Jail. The 73-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder has been held in solitary confinement since August 2023 on multiple convictions he and his party insist are politically motivated. Family members say they have been denied access for over six weeks despite court orders, while jail authorities maintain that Khan is healthy and receiving proper care.

The alarm escalated after a May 2024 op-ed Khan wrote for The Telegraph resurfaced widely, in which he directly accused Army Chief General Asim Munir of orchestrating efforts to eliminate him politically and warned that Munir would bear responsibility for any harm. “All that is left for them is to now murder me. I have stated publicly that if anything happens to me or my wife, General Asim Munir will be responsible. But I am not afraid because my faith is strong. I would prefer death over slavery,” Khan wrote from jail, a year before the current blackout on his condition began.

Khan’s London-based son Kasim Khan issued a scathing open letter on Thursday night, revealing that his father has been kept in a “death cell” in complete isolation for the past six weeks, barred even from phone calls. “His sisters have been denied every meeting despite clear court orders… This complete darkness is not part of any security protocol; it is a deliberate attempt to hide his condition,” Kasim wrote, demanding immediate proof of life and warning that the government and its “masters” would bear full legal and international responsibility for any harm.

Adiala Jail authorities swiftly rejected the rumors, stating that Khan remains in the facility, is in good health, and that PTI leadership has been kept informed. They dismissed claims of any transfer or deterioration in his condition as “entirely baseless.” Despite the official rebuttal, the combination of prolonged incommunicado detention, the resurfaced death threat accusation against General Munir, and the family’s public appeals have fuelled widespread anxiety among PTI supporters.

The episode marks the most serious escalation in concerns over Khan’s well-being since his arrest, coming amid continuing legal battles and political deadlock nearly two years after his ouster in a no-confidence vote. Human rights organizations and foreign governments have previously criticized the conditions of his detention; Friday’s developments are likely to renew international calls for transparency and access to the former premier.
