Empowering Women: Swiggy’s Rising Female Delivery Riders Inspire Inclusive Growth
Swiggy CEO highlights growth opportunities in India, with female delivery riders increasing.
India’s food delivery market continues to offer significant growth potential, according to Rohit Kapoor, CEO of Swiggy’s Food Marketplace. Speaking to PTI on Friday ahead of International Women’s Day, Kapoor highlighted that despite rapid expansion, India remains one of the most under-penetrated markets for food delivery, leaving considerable headroom for growth.
“India remains absolutely the most under-penetrated market in food delivery. You can take any metric — we are not just lower than Western averages, we are even below some Southeast Asian countries. So the long-term headroom on penetration remains significant,” Kapoor said. He added that while Swiggy continues to maintain profitability, the company will closely monitor investments that create new growth opportunities.
Swiggy has been expanding its focus on inclusivity, particularly by increasing female delivery riders in cities where women ride two-wheelers frequently, such as Chandigarh, parts of Gujarat, and South India. Kapoor noted that this trend reflects both urban mobility patterns and the platform’s commitment to supporting gender diversity among its workforce.

The remarks came at the ‘She The Change’ event, an initiative celebrating women who are redefining India’s culinary and business landscape. Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who was the chief guest, praised women-led businesses as vital for India’s growth and emphasized the importance of supporting women entrepreneurs for inclusive economic development.
Swiggy, which also operates Instamart, reported a widening of consolidated losses for the third quarter ended December at ₹1,065 crore, up from ₹799 crore in the same period last year. The losses were attributed to rising advertising and sales promotion expenses and continuing challenges in the quick commerce segment.
Despite financial pressures, Kapoor stressed that strategic investments in the right areas would continue to unlock future opportunities. The company remains focused on expanding its reach across India while fostering inclusivity, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the food delivery sector.
