Elon Musk Announces xAI Will Review Past Interview Records to Find Promising Talent
Elon Musk apologizes for early hiring errors and says xAI will review past rejections to recruit top talent.
Billionaire Elon Musk has announced that his AI company xAI will revisit applications from candidates who were previously rejected or not interviewed. Musk acknowledged on X on Friday that many talented individuals may have missed out on opportunities to work at the company.
“Many talented people over the past few years were declined an offer or even an interview at xAI. My apologies. I and Baris Akis are going through the company interview history and reaching back out to promising candidates,” Musk wrote. He emphasized that xAI “was not built right the first time around” and said he is taking steps to rebuild the company from the ground up, with a focus on attracting top talent.
Musk compared the challenges at xAI to those he faced at Tesla, where he joined as CEO in 2008, five years after its founding, and guided its growth into a global automotive leader. By reviewing past interview records, Musk aims to ensure that promising candidates receive a second chance, reflecting his broader vision for strengthening the company.

Last month, Musk revealed that SpaceX acquired xAI, which he had launched in July 2023. He also highlighted the connection between xAI and his social media platform X, announcing that xAI acquired X in a $33 billion deal in March 2025. The acquisition is expected to enhance xAI’s capacity to train its Grok chatbot.
The move by Musk echoes a similar initiative in India, where Deepinder Goyal, CEO of Zomato’s parent company Eternal, reached out to former employees. Goyal reported receiving responses from around 8,000 people, including 4,000 ex-Zomato employees, demonstrating the potential impact of revisiting previously overlooked talent.
Musk’s announcement underscores his commitment to correcting early hiring missteps at xAI and expanding the company’s pool of skilled professionals as it continues to grow in the competitive AI sector.
