Elderly Vendor Forced to Pull Wife on Cart to Hospital in Sagar Tragedy
Elderly Pawan Sahu pulls his ill wife on a handcart to the hospital in Sagar after no ambulance arrives; she dies midway.
An elderly vegetable vendor was forced to carry his critically ill wife on a handcart to a hospital in Sagar after failing to secure an ambulance or any form of transport, a tragic ordeal that ended with her death on the way on Saturday.
According to local accounts, Pawan Sahu, who earns his living by pulling a handcart and selling vegetables, found himself without options when his wife’s condition suddenly deteriorated. Lacking money, access to private transport, and awareness of emergency systems, he reportedly went door to door in his neighborhood, pleading for help to call an ambulance. Residents allege that no assistance was arranged in time.
With no alternative available, Sahu placed his ailing wife on the same handcart he uses daily for work and began pulling it towards the hospital. Witnesses said he struggled desperately to reach medical care, but near the Mata Madhiya area en route, his wife succumbed to her illness before treatment could be administered.

Pawan Sahu is originally from Sesai village in the Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh and has been living in Sagar for the past 10 to 12 years. His wife had reportedly been unwell for a long period, and the family had already exhausted their limited savings on medical treatment. When her condition worsened, they neither had the funds for private transport nor the means to navigate emergency health services.
After the woman’s death, members of Apna Seva Samiti, a local social service organization, arranged a vehicle to transport the body to the Naryawali Naka crematorium, where the last rites were performed. Several bystanders who witnessed the incident described the scene as deeply distressing.
Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Mamta Timori said the incident has come to her notice and an inquiry has been initiated to determine why an ambulance was not provided. She added that all possible assistance would be extended to the affected family, as the episode has once again raised serious questions about access to emergency healthcare for the poor.
