Earthquake In India's Northeast: Magnitude 5.0 Tremors Hit Arunachal Pradesh's Shi Yomi
Magnitude 5.0 quake shakes Arunachal Pradesh's Shi Yomi.
A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Arunachal Pradesh's Shi Yomi district on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor's epicentre was located about 60 kilometres north-northeast of Shi Yomi. There were no immediate reports of casualties, injuries or damage to property, while local authorities continued to monitor the situation and assess any possible impact in the affected areas.
The earthquake was felt in parts of the northeastern region, which lies in India's highest seismic risk category, Seismic Zone V. Owing to its geographical location along the Himalayan belt, the region frequently experiences earthquakes of varying intensity. Officials have not reported any major disruption following the latest tremor, although assessments are ongoing, particularly in remote and mountainous areas.
The latest quake comes weeks after a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Siang district on July 16. Earlier this year, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake was also recorded in Assam's Hailakandi district, underscoring the continued seismic activity across the Northeast. Experts have long identified the region as one of the country's most earthquake-prone areas because of its active geological setting.

Shi Yomi, a sparsely populated district bordering the Tibet Autonomous Region, is characterised by rugged mountains and scattered settlements, making post-earthquake damage assessment and emergency response more challenging. Difficult terrain and limited connectivity can delay the movement of rescue teams and the collection of information from affected villages following seismic events.
Geologists attribute earthquakes in the region to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. As the Indian Plate continues to move northwards beneath the Eurasian Plate at an estimated rate of 40 to 50 millimetres annually, stress accumulates along major fault lines beneath the Himalayas. The gradual release of this stored energy results in frequent earthquakes, making preparedness, monitoring and resilient infrastructure essential across India's northeastern states.
