EAM Jaishankar Highlights India-Europe Cooperation as Key to Global Economic Stability

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said India’s growing partnership with Europe could play a crucial role in stabilising the global economy and international politics. Speaking in Paris after talks with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, he underlined Europe’s importance as a key global actor at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
Jaishankar described his visit to Europe as a deliberate strategic choice, reflecting India’s belief that relations with the continent are poised to move to a higher level. He noted that discussions with European partners increasingly span trade, technology, defence and infrastructure, indicating a relationship that has expanded well beyond traditional diplomatic engagement.
The remarks come amid shifting global dynamics, including tensions in West Asia, concerns over recent US military actions in Venezuela, and strains in India–US ties following the imposition of steep tariffs by Washington. Against this backdrop, Jaishankar said India and Europe share a responsibility to contribute to a more stable global order.

Highlighting ongoing cooperation, the minister pointed to progress on issues such as a proposed India-EU free trade agreement, semiconductors, railways, aviation and defence collaboration. He said these areas reflect both economic opportunity and strategic alignment, adding that India and Europe can jointly influence norms shaping the international system.
Jaishankar also noted a busy diplomatic calendar ahead, with several European leaders, including the German chancellor, the French president and senior EU officials, expected to visit India in the coming weeks. He said India and France, as long-standing strategic partners, have an especially important role to play in promoting multipolarity and contributing to global political and economic stability.
